Iran “executed protester” photo: the outrage is real, but the named claim still needs a primary source

A David J Harris Jr. Facebook photo post says a 21-year-old named Ghaem Hosseini was executed after protesting for freedom in January. PBC is preserving the photo and caption because the broader Iran execution/protest-repression story is serious — but the named claim did not verify through accessible public records in this pass.

Evidence boundary: Exact-name searches for “Ghaem Hosseini,” alternate transliterations, and Persian variants returned no public match from this environment. IranHR and OHCHR were bot-gated; Google returned a bot page. This article therefore reports the named execution as a Facebook claim, not a confirmed death notice.

What the post says

The visible Facebook post text reads: “EXECUTED: Ghaem Hosseini, 21 years old, who protested for freedom in January, was executed this morning by the Islamic regime. Where is the world's outrage? Where is the UN?”

The post had high visible engagement at capture — roughly 46,000 reactions, 7,300 comments and 7,700 shares — which is why source-boundary wording matters. A viral execution graphic can move faster than the record trail.

What is confirmed more broadly

Amnesty International’s Iran 2025 page says Iranian authorities intensified internal repression, arbitrarily detained and prosecuted people exercising human rights, and used unlawful force to disperse protests. Amnesty also says trials remained systematically unfair and that Iran recorded the highest number of executions since 1989.

Amnesty’s page specifically says protesters, dissidents, women defying compulsory veiling, journalists, lawyers, human-rights defenders, students and minority communities were among those targeted, with violations including arbitrary detention, torture or other ill-treatment, death threats, unfair trials and exposure to the death penalty.

Human Rights Watch’s Iran page likewise presents politically motivated executions, protest crackdowns, mass arrests and prisoner risk as active Iran human-rights issues. That supports the seriousness of the context — not the identity/date of this specific Facebook-named case.

The lesson is not to make a viral photo carry more proof than it contains. The lesson is to preserve the lead, demand records and keep attention on political executions and unfair trials.
