# Source note — Alice Weidel climate-hoax quote / Canada wildfire-arson claim

Date checked: 2026-07-20

## Evidence label
PBC source-check / climate-policy notes. The Instagram post and meme image are social leads. The Alice Weidel quote is supported by surfaced YouTube/TikTok captions. The broader claims are separated into: quote attribution, official climate evidence, Canada wildfire/arson evidence, and policy/industry-cost debate.

## Social lead
- User image: `user-supplied-climate-quote-image.jpg`.
- Instagram URL: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Da5kUoeRLMC/?igsh=ZjZzc3VoZnk0bTBy
- Browser-visible Instagram account: `truthseeker01011`, displayed as Tajana Cekic.
- Browser-visible caption: “It’s arson season in Canada because climate change is as real as Santa, the tooth fairy and Easter bunny.”
- Instagram metadata: `instagram-meta.json`.
- `yt-dlp` could not download the Instagram Reel: Instagram returned an empty media response. Browser resources exposed video fragments, but no clean MP4 was preserved in this pass.

## Quote attribution
The meme text reads: “We must declare the climate crisis over. The whole thing is a hoax. A complete scam to crush industry.”

The source trail strongly points to Alice Weidel, co-leader of Germany’s AfD. A surfaced YouTube copy titled `Klimakrise = HOAX?! Weidel rechnet ab` and a TikTok copy from `alice_weidel_afd` include captions:

German: “Auch müssen wir die Klimakrise für beendet erklären… ein Hoax, also ein ganzer Betrug, um die Industrie platt zu machen.”

English auto-caption: “We must also declare the climate crisis over… a hoax, a complete fraud to destroy the industry.”

The meme wording is therefore close paraphrase/translation, not proof that every English word was her original wording.

## What supports policy-skeptic notes
- B.C. Wildfire Service: 10-year average 2014–2024 is 1,527 fires; average 40% human-caused and 60% lightning-caused. In 2023 B.C. listed 609 human-caused fires and 1,638 lightning-caused fires.
- CBC: concrete arson statistics are not readily available because arson is generally inside the broader “human-caused” category; wildfires in Canada are caused almost equally by humans and lightning, varying by province.
- Canada’s industrial carbon pricing page lists a headline price path for industrial systems, including $95/t CO2e in 2026, $130/t in 2035 and inflation-escalated values later.
- Germany/Weidel energy-policy criticism is a political/industrial-policy argument, not simply a climate-science claim.

## What does not support the viral claim
- IPCC AR6: human activities have unequivocally caused global warming, with global surface temperature reaching about 1.1°C above 1850–1900 in 2011–2020.
- NASA: evidence of warming is unequivocal and human activity is the principal cause.
- Canada’s Changing Climate Report: Canada has warmed about twice the global rate; more than half of warming can be attributed to human-caused greenhouse-gas emissions.
- World Weather Attribution: 2023 Eastern Canada extreme fire weather was made more likely/intense by human-induced climate change.

## Bottom line
The Weidel quote is real/traceable. The claim that climate policy can damage industry is a fair policy debate. The claim that climate change itself is imaginary or that Canadian wildfires are just “arson season” is not supported by the official evidence gathered here.
