# Source note — blood pressure “normal numbers” Instagram source-check

## Social lead

The Instagram post from `msglucoseofficial` claims blood pressure “normal” numbers changed from 160/95 in 1970 to 140/90 in 1985 to 110/70 in 2026. The caption uses that hook to point readers toward insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, nutrition, movement and metabolic health, and asks viewers to comment “BP” for a protocol.

## What PBC verified

- Blood-pressure categories, diagnostic thresholds and treatment targets have changed over time.
- AHA/ACC 2017 moved U.S. hypertension classification to 130/80 or higher; prior practice often used 140/90.
- Canada.ca says blood pressure lower than 120/80 is considered normal, and discusses 140/90 or lower for most people / 130/80 or lower at home in its patient-facing measuring section.
- Hypertension Canada’s 2025 primary-care guideline defines hypertension as BP ≥130/80 mm Hg under standardized validated measurement conditions and recommends healthy lifestyle changes for all adults with hypertension; it starts pharmacotherapy at ≥140/90, and at 130–139 systolic for high-risk adults.
- WHO pharmacologic guideline uses diagnosis/therapy frameworks rather than a social-media “normal” number.
- Insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome and blood pressure are connected, but the physiology is not as simple as “insulin resistance causes all high BP.” A review says correlations exist, but obesity/visceral fat, kidney/RAAS/sympathetic mechanisms and other factors are often more important.

## Wording decision

Publish as a PBC Health source-check. Bottom line: the direction of the post is partly right — thresholds and targets moved downward and lifestyle/metabolic health matters — but the exact “1970 160/95 / 1985 140/90 / 2026 110/70” graphic is oversimplified and the “BP protocol” funnel should not replace clinical diagnosis or treatment.

## Medical safety boundary

This article is not medical advice. Do not stop blood-pressure medication, ignore symptoms, skip clinician follow-up, or self-treat severe readings because of an Instagram post. Severe symptoms or readings around 180/120 require urgent medical evaluation.
