# Homeschooling in Canada: sources and methods
Published September 28, 2026. PBC editorial research; no original family interviews.

## Findings
Canada: 63,150 reported home-schooling enrolments in 2023/24, +55.5% from 2019/20, +64.7% from 2018/19, +113.9% from 2014/15, -24.8% from the 2020/21 peak, +9.1% from 2022/23. National share: 1.05% using all school/program enrolments; 1.11% using regular youth programs.

## Data and reproducibility
Statistics Canada table 37-10-0109-01, release October 28, 2025; downloaded September 28, 2026. National trend and provincial comparison CSVs preserve denominators and alternative youth measures. calculations.json records source hash, formulas, baseline values and companion-table checks. Main counts use Home-schooling / Total, program type, consistently. Provincial shares are within-jurisdiction enrolment shares, not shares of the national homeschooling total.
Counts are randomly rounded to multiples of three; national and summed subnational totals can differ. Missing Nunavut data are not zero: its homeschoolers are included under public schools. The grade/sex companion table 37-10-0178-01 has a B.C. distributed-learning footnote from 2010/11; cross-province and legal-category comparisons require caution. 2019/20 counts are measured near the start of the year, before pandemic closures. Annual stocks cannot show family retention, transfers or motivation. 2024/25 collection questionnaires are not released results.

## Reel findings
Downloaded Instagram Reel DdFCx_SPYGK, inspected sampled frames and automatic audio transcript. The 176% interval is unspecified: Ontario 2019/20–2023/24 is +32.8%. An older 2006/07–2019/20 interval approximately matches 176%, but source provenance is not established. The nearly-60%-of-boards statement is attributable to Toronto Star September 2026 reporting citing the Ontario ministry for 2025/26; no board-by-board primary reproduction was performed. A May 13, 2026 ministry memo separately projects about 13,000 fewer students in 2026/27. Neither establishes homeschooling as the cause. FAO capacity statistics concern different units/measures.

## Policy and research limits
BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec official policies directly reviewed. Alberta funding uses the 2026/27 form, not an older amount. Ontario PPM131 is still posted but dates from 2002; old attendance-age/health-service appendix language is not reproduced. Quebec process page updated August 20, 2026. Other linked provincial hubs are starting points; NWT/Nunavut current rules not audited.
Canadian 2011 achievement study: 74 young children, volunteer/matched sample, not randomized or nationally representative. Adult follow-up (2009): 226 respondents/128 families, Canadian Centre for Home Education-funded, not generalizable nationally. Autism Research (2025) uses a 2018 Ontario caregiver survey, not post-COVID data. CBC 2022 family interviews illustrate experiences, not nationally ranked motives. No causal superiority claim is made. Recommendations and PBC’s view are editorial analysis.

## Capture and privacy
Original media, raw source pages/PDFs and full automated transcript retained locally. Public package contains a video preview and sanitized source summary, no reader-comment claims, raw social metadata, private correspondence or credentials. Original video is linked rather than rehosted.
