Australia gun buyback, Germany protest policing: what two Outside Canada Reels get right — and what they do not prove
Two Reels point to real public-order fights: Australia’s post-Bondi gun buyback and Germany’s hard line around some pro-Palestine demonstrations. But captions and thumbnails are not enough to prove every claim.
What Reel 1 says: Australia, Bondi and gun buybacks
The public Instagram metadata for DcFxjLmy4Zk identifies the account as Kellie Sloane MP / NSW Opposition Leader. The caption says: “No Premier — and no PM … A gun buyback isn’t going to prevent another terrorist attack.” It says terrorists will not walk into a police station to hand over weapons, criticizes rushed Labor gun laws a week after Bondi, and says Liberal support came with caveats about unintended consequences and consultation.
That is a political claim layered on top of real policy. NSW’s own gun-buyback page says New South Wales will participate in the National Gun Buyback Scheme starting Monday 2 November 2026; the state and Commonwealth will share costs 50:50; and the scheme is tied to firearm limits and classification changes under the Terrorism and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2025. NSW says the reforms followed the antisemitic terrorist attack at Bondi Beach on 14 December 2025 and include capping/restricting firearm numbers and types, strengthening checks and reducing licence periods.
ABC reported NSW would be the first state to begin the scheme, that up to $10,000 per firearm could be paid in some cases, and that as many as 274,000 firearms and 50,000 licence holders were estimated to be affected. ABC also reported the December 2025 package passed after a marathon debate, split the Coalition, and drew criticism for limited consultation and protest-power provisions.
What Reel 2 says: Germany, protests and symbols
The public Instagram metadata for DcJe4sIza5_ identifies the account as Morgovideos. The caption says German police have intensified forceful crackdowns on pro-Palestine demonstrations in Berlin and Cologne, including strict rally conditions, confrontations, arrests, restrictions on symbols such as Palestinian flags and keffiyehs, and prohibitions on slogans like “from the river to the sea.”
There is a real source trail behind parts of that claim. Al Jazeera published April 2026 footage/reporting saying two women were arrested at a pro-Palestine demonstration in Berlin while participants waved Palestinian flags amid a heavy police presence. Earlier reporting and rights commentary describe Berlin restrictions after October 2023, including bans or restrictions on some pro-Palestine demonstrations/symbols in certain contexts. Search captures also show the slogan “from the river to the sea” has produced German court/legal controversy, including a reported fine and later debate over whether courts treat it as a Hamas symbol or protected/prosecutable speech depending on context.
The Reel’s thumbnail, however, is not enough to prove the specific scene, cause of intervention, legality of the police action, or conduct of participants. It is blurry and editorialized. PBC treats it as evidence of the viral framing, not as independent proof of what happened.
