Google, military contracts and who actually controls Alphabet
A viral Instagram Reel asks: “Google is a military contractor — who runs Google? What do they all have in common?” The useful public-interest question is real: Google/Alphabet has public-sector and defence links, and Alphabet’s voting control is concentrated through Class B shares. The unsupported leap is turning names, flags, surnames or religion into proof of hidden control.
Short verdict
Mostly true kernel: Google/Alphabet has public-sector, military-branch and defence-adjacent business. Google Public Sector explicitly serves government and military missions, and the Reel shows a Google Cloud/ST Solutions U.S. Navy maintenance-inspection article. Google was also part of the Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability cloud ecosystem.
Ownership/control kernel: Alphabet is public, but the 2026 proxy shows Larry Page and Sergey Brin together control a majority of voting power through Class B shares: 27.4% plus 25.3% = 52.7%.
Unsupported leap: The Reel/comment ecosystem implies that people’s background, surname, religion or nationality explains control. The source-backed answer is shares, board seats, executive roles and contracts — not identity insinuation.

What “military contractor” means here
It does not mean Google is primarily a weapons manufacturer. The public record supports a more precise description: Google/Alphabet sells cloud, AI, cybersecurity, data, mapping/geospatial and public-sector technology services. That includes government agencies and military branches. Those contracts are legitimate subjects for public scrutiny because they affect surveillance, targeting, data sovereignty, AI use and civil liberties.
What the Reel gets wrong or leaves hanging
- It does not prove “who runs Google” by showing flags, surnames or a face montage.
- It mixes ownership/control, public-sector contracting, health/pharma imagery, mosquito-control media, Google Earth/Keyhole lore and crypto/Tether context without clearly proving a single coordinated scheme.
- It uses a real voting-control fact — Page and Brin’s Class B power — but wraps it in insinuation.
