RFK Jr. vaccine-autism Facebook Reel checked: real quote, weak proof, risky detox leap

PBC Health preserves a Facebook Reel claiming vaccines cause autism and checks RFK Jr.’s hepatitis-B/Verstraeten claim, autism prevalence data, Thorsen fraud allegations, childhood health statistics and heavy-metal detox claims.

Verdict: The Reel is real and the RFK Jr. quote is real. But the broad conclusion “vaccines cause autism” is not proven by the cited interview excerpt. The strongest part is that autism identification has risen; the weakest parts are the leap from preliminary/raw-data claims to causation, and the caption’s “detox pack” implication for children.

What the Reel says

Autism is caused by vaccines? Yeah, Autism is caused by vaccines. And by the way, CDC's own data, you know, and they did it as a study called the first rat and study in 1989. And they looked at the hepatitis B vaccine, they looked at children, and from the biggest database in the world of vaccine safety data, like they looked at children who got the hepatitis B vaccine during their first 30 days, and they compared those to kids who got it later or didn't get it at all. And there was a 1350% elevated risk for autism among the people who got the vaccine. There may well be, but there are studies with millions of people. You would know what that means. You have this one. There's a series of about 13 studies that were done by people we call by institutes. One of them was the leading one who are people who do these studies, for money for CDC, who were paid for by CDC in order to create the illusion that vaccines don't cause autism. If the chief scientist was a guy called Paul Thorntson, who CDC laid and his study is the most cited study for this proposition. And Paul Thorntson is now a fugitive. He's wanted by Interpol. He stole millions of dollars from CDC that he had claimed to use on this study, but he was building houses and buying motorcycles and living a life of luxury. And the his study is absolute fraud. What checked out

The video claim exists. The captured audio says: “Autism is caused by vaccines,” and references hepatitis-B vaccination, the Vaccine Safety Datalink, Poul Thorsen, and RFK Jr.’s book.
Autism identification has risen. CDC ADDM data show identified ASD prevalence rising from about 1 in 150 in 2000 to 1 in 36 in 2020 and 1 in 31 in 2022, with large site differences and identification-practice caveats.
The Thorsen financial-fraud trail is real. DOJ records show Poul Thorsen was charged over stealing CDC grant money tied to autism/public-health research. That is serious, but it does not automatically prove the datasets or all vaccine-autism studies are fraudulent.
Some caption statistics have real kernels. The 1-in-285 childhood cancer figure appears in American Cancer Society/PubMed literature as lifetime risk before age 20. Food allergy and eczema figures are more mixed and lower in CDC/NCHS national estimates than the caption’s wording suggests.

Where the Reel overreaches

Preliminary data is not causal proof. Stossel’s fact-check says Kennedy cited preliminary raw Verstraeten data; later analyses adjusted the association away. That does not settle the debate in Kennedy’s favour.
MMR and thimerosal have been heavily reviewed. The IOM/National Academies review found the epidemiological evidence favoured rejecting a causal relationship for MMR and thimerosal-containing vaccines. CDC’s thimerosal page says autism rates kept rising after thimerosal was removed from most U.S. childhood vaccines.
“Detox” is the risky leap. Diet quality and environmental exposures matter, but chelation/heavy-metal detox is not an established autism treatment and can cause harm when used outside confirmed poisoning and medical supervision.
