Alice Weidel “climate hoax” quote: real clip, weaker wildfire claim
The quote in the meme is traceable to Alice Weidel/AfD, but the Instagram caption’s “arson season” leap needs evidence labels. Climate policy can be debated; “climate is fake” is not supported by the official records gathered here.

Short verdict
Quote: substantially real. “Climate is fake / Canadian fires are just arson”: not proven. The quote matches German/English captions from surfaced Alice Weidel YouTube and TikTok clips. But the attached Instagram caption — “It’s arson season in Canada because climate change is as real as Santa…” — overreaches. Canada has human-caused fires, and arson exists, but official records do not support replacing climate/fire-weather evidence with an arson-only explanation.
What the Instagram post shows
The Instagram Reel is from truthseeker01011, displayed as Tajana Cekic. Browser text showed the caption: “It’s arson season in Canada because climate change is as real as Santa, the tooth fairy and Easter bunny.” The video was visible in-browser but blocked direct yt-dlp download, so this article relies on browser-visible text, the supplied image, Instagram metadata and alternate Weidel clips.
Quote attribution: Alice Weidel
The meme says: “We must declare the climate crisis over. The whole thing is a hoax. A complete scam to crush industry.” Searches and xAI/X search pointed to Alice Weidel, co-leader of Germany’s AfD. A surfaced YouTube copy and a TikTok copy from alice_weidel_afd contain German captions saying: “Auch müssen wir die Klimakrise für beendet erklären… ein Hoax, also ein ganzer Betrug, um die Industrie platt zu machen.” The English captions render this as “declare the climate crisis over… a hoax… a complete fraud to destroy the industry.”
So: the quote is real in substance, but the meme is a translated/paraphrased quote card, not a primary transcript.
What supports the policy-skeptic side
- Industry costs are real debate: Canada’s industrial carbon-pricing page lists a CO2e price path rising from $95/t in 2026 to $130/t by 2035, with further inflation-linked increases. That is a legitimate competitiveness and cost question.
- Arson exists, but is hard to isolate: CBC notes concrete arson statistics are not readily available because arson is generally grouped into broader “human-caused” wildfire categories.
- Human-caused fires are real: B.C. Wildfire Service says the 2014–2024 average is 40% human-caused and 60% lightning-caused fires. Human behaviour matters.
- Policy language can be politicized: Weidel’s “hoax” language is political rhetoric aimed at the climate-crisis framing and Germany’s energy/industrial policy, not a scientific paper.
What weakens the viral claim
- Climate change is not imaginary: IPCC AR6 says human activities have unequivocally caused global warming, with surface temperature about 1.1°C above 1850–1900 in 2011–2020.
- NASA says the evidence is unequivocal: NASA’s evidence page says Earth is warming at an unprecedented rate and human activity is the principal cause.
- Canada has warmed faster than the global average: Canada’s Changing Climate Report says Canada’s mean annual temperature rose about 1.7°C from 1948–2016, roughly double the global mean rate; more than half of warming is attributed to human-caused greenhouse-gas emissions.
- 2023 fire weather had climate signal: World Weather Attribution found climate change made 2023 extreme fire-weather conditions in Eastern Canada more likely and more intense.
- B.C. 2023/2024 were mostly lightning-caused by count: B.C. reports 2023 fires as 609 human-caused and 1,638 lightning-caused; 2024 as 511 human-caused and 1,186 lightning-caused.
PBC notes: possible / proven / not proven
| Claim | Evidence label |
|---|---|
| Alice Weidel made the climate-hoax / industry quote | Substantially verified from alternate captions |
| Climate policy can burden industry | Fair policy debate; carbon-pricing and energy-cost evidence supports discussing costs |
| Arson and human-caused fires occur in Canada | Confirmed, but arson-specific national stats are not readily separated |
| Canadian wildfire seasons are simply “arson season” | Not proven; B.C. and national sources show lightning and climate/fire-weather factors matter |
| Human-caused climate change is a total hoax | Contradicted by IPCC, NASA and Canada’s Changing Climate Report |
Bottom line
The best PBC framing is not “science is fake.” The stronger, source-backed frame is: the climate-crisis political narrative and climate-policy costs deserve scrutiny, but Canadian wildfire claims still need evidence labels, and official climate records cannot be dismissed as imaginary.
