Kiano Vafaeian MAID death-certificate post: B.C. certificate image, Ontario CPSO rule and what national numbers count
A Facebook post claims a B.C. MAID death certificate says “MAID,” while Ontario guidance would tell doctors to list the illness, disease or disability instead. PBC’s check: the Ontario CPSO quote is real, the visible B.C. image appears to show MAID in the cause field, but personal-record details and individual allegations still require authorized records.
What the Facebook post claims
The post says “Kiano Vafaeian was 26,” alleges diabetes/depression and other case details, and says the certificate “says MAID.” It argues that had the death occurred in Ontario, the certificate would have listed diabetes because Ontario’s College tells doctors that the certificate “cannot include any reference to MAID or the medications administered.”

What PBC could verify
The privacy-limited internal image check found the Facebook-visible document appears to be a B.C. Medical Certification of Death and that “MAID/MAiD” is visibly written in the medical cause-of-death section. PBC is not publishing the raw image or transcribing personal identifiers.
The Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons page is explicit. Under Medical Certificates of Death in the MAID Context, CPSO says: when completing a medical certificate of death for a person to whom MAID was administered, the illness, disease or disability leading to the request is to be recorded as cause of death, and the certificate cannot include any reference to MAID or the medications administered.
What this means for national numbers
The post raises a real comparability concern: death-certificate wording can differ from MAID reporting. But that does not automatically prove national MAID reporting is “lies” or “corruption.” Health Canada’s annual MAID report is a separate reporting system supplied by provincial/territorial health officials and clinicians/pharmacy personnel, not merely a count of what appears on public death certificates.
