Smart-meter EMF Reel: real RF regulation, overstated “cellular poisoning” claim

A viral Instagram Reel says smart-meter EMF exposure is "poisoning on a cellular level" and uses a 2017 power-density chart to argue Canada/U.S. safety limits are far above levels that damage health. PBC preserved the Reel and checked the claim against Health Canada, ISED, WHO and FDA source material.

What the Reel claims

The caption says EMF is one of many ways people are being poisoned and says smart devices will increase exposure. The video transcript presents a chart comparing alleged health-effect levels with smart-meter measurements and Canadian/U.S. safety limits.

"It's poisoning on a cellular level."

The transcript specifically claims a single Itron smart meter produced pulses around 7.93 microW/cm2, that an apartment meter bank can be much higher, and that Canada/U.S. limits of 600-1000 microW/cm2 are tens of thousands of times higher than levels known to damage health.

What official sources say

Health Canada confirms that Safety Code 6 covers RF-EMF from technologies including Wi-Fi, cell phones, smart meters and 5G. It says the limits are not device-specific, are based on ongoing review of peer-reviewed science and a weight-of-evidence approach, and are intended to protect against established adverse health effects with large safety margins and continuous 24/7 exposure coverage.

Health Canada's browser-visible page says biological effects are not automatically adverse health effects, lists peripheral nerve stimulation and tissue heating as scientifically established RF-EMF effects, and says no adverse health effects have been scientifically established below Safety Code 6 limits.

WHO's EMF Q&A similarly distinguishes biological effects from health hazards and says no adverse health effects from low-level, long-term RF or power-frequency exposure have been confirmed, while research continues.

PBC bottom line

The Reel is correct that smart meters are RF-EMF sources and that governments set exposure limits. It is also fair to ask for current measurement data and transparent source comparisons. But the stronger claim - that smart-meter exposure below legal limits is proven cellular-level poisoning - is not established by the public regulatory sources reviewed here.
