A Blindspot News Instagram Reel shows European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen being confronted over Gaza child deaths. PBC checked the Reel against older public copies of the same incident and UN/UNICEF humanitarian context.

Short verdict

The clip is not just invented. Alternate public copies identify the incident as a protester confronting Ursula von der Leyen ahead of an EU election debate in Maastricht on April 29, 2024. The Blindspot News version reposts and reframes that older moment in 2026 under the headline-style line “15,000 Children Are Dead—And You’re Smiling?”

The humanitarian concern behind the protest is real: UNICEF and UN/OCHA sources document catastrophic harm to children in Gaza. But the Reel’s broader claims about EU “complicity,” NATO and “imperial overreach” are political interpretation, not proven by the short clip alone.

What the Reel claims

The Instagram caption says a woman confronts European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen over Gaza, says 15,000 children have been lost, and questions EU priorities. The visible video frame reads “BLINDSPOT NEWS” and “15,000 Children Are Dead—And You’re Smiling?”

Instagram blocked direct `yt-dlp` download, but the browser-loaded page showed the public caption and a playable video. Alternate public copies from NoComment/X, Facebook and Blindspot/YouTube were downloaded for source checking.

What the older copy confirms

NoComment’s X copy describes the event as a protester calling Ursula von der Leyen a war criminal ahead of the first debate with lead candidates in the European elections, held in Maastricht on April 29, 2024. The audio transcript includes the protester saying in German that “15,000 children are dead,” and then in English: “15,000 children are dead … and all you do is laugh.”

What the child-casualty sources say

The exact number depends on date and category. The protest line was from April 2024. A UN-hosted UNICEF report later said that by October 2024 at least 14,000 children in Gaza had reportedly been killed, with thousands more likely under rubble. UNICEF’s May 2025 statement said more than 50,000 children had reportedly been killed or injured since October 2023. UNICEF’s October 2025 statement said 64,000 children had reportedly been killed or maimed across Gaza.

That means the activist’s 15,000 figure was broadly in the range of the child-death figures circulating in that period, but it should not be treated as a fresh 2026 count or as the same category as later “killed or injured” or “killed or maimed” totals.

What not to overclaim

The clip shows a confrontation and a moral accusation. It does not, by itself, prove legal responsibility or policy causation. Terms such as “complicity,” “war criminal,” and “genocide” should be attributed to the activist, the Reel caption or specific legal/inquiry sources when used. PBC’s finding is narrower: the encounter happened, the repost is real, and the child-harm context in Gaza is extensively documented by UN/UNICEF sources.
